Out and About
We are lucky to live in a region that is incredibly rich in history and culture, and I want you to use some of your summer to enjoy it. Your first assignment is to go visit a museum, historical site, state park, or to attend a concert, play, art show or theatrical performance. There are lots of places you can visit free of charge throughout our area, though if you want to go somewhere that charges an admission, that is up to you and your family.
While on your visit take a moment to find out who manages the site, or who put together the exhibit or event you are attending. If the place has a website, that might help you out with information.
After the visit type a letter of about one-page to the person responsible for the site to tell them about your experience. You might just want to let them know what the visit was like from the perspective of a student, you might make suggestions about ways to improve visitor experience, you might compliment the work they are doing, or you might politely critique some aspect of the site. Ultimately, the content is up to you. When you have completed your letter and carefully proofread it, keep a copy for submission to me and send a copy directly to the addressee. Sending the letter is mandatory! If you receive a response, please bring a copy to class, they are great fun to share.
Please visit the class blog and post a quick note about your visit. It might encourage others to try visiting a place you liked, and will let me know you are working on your summer assignments.
One final note: I strongly encourage you to go out and try something new and different. Going to a local movie theatre, or hanging out with your buddies at Butler Park doesn’t count here.
On my vacation last week to New Hampshire , we visited the USS Albacore Park in Portsmouth . The USS Albacore is a submarine that was on duty during World War 2. The actual submarine is displayed in the yard of the museum , and you can actually go inside the submarine and take a tour . While on our visit , we asked George Milliken , the man who was working there at the time , if he knew anything about my great grandfather who was on the USS Robalo , another submarine during World War 2. Mr.Milliken helped us find information about my great grandfather and how he died in the submarine . The site I visited is absolutley an amazing experience and I am thankful that I had the oppurtunity to learn more about my great grandfather .
ReplyDeleteThis past week, I visited the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA. I was able to see his artwork displayed in multiple exhibits throughout the museum and one of his art studios. It was one of twenty studios he had. I learned that every studio was built facing north because northern light is the most consistent. While I was there, there was also a traveling exhibit from Blue Sky Studios, the makers of Ice Age, Rio, Robots, and other live animation films. It was interesting to see a multimedia artist and illustrator's work alongside the work of modern animators.

I learned that he had twenty different studios that all faced north because northern light is the most consistent, and therefore the best natural light for an artist to use. While I was there, I was able to see a traveling exhibit from Blue Sky Studios, the makers of Ice Age, Robots, Rio, and other live animation films. There was interactive parts of the exhibit, which allowed people to make their own animated characters and learn about how lighting affects animation. It was interesting to see the work of a multimedia artist and illustrator alongside the work of modern animators.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I went to the New York State Museum in Albany. I was there for three hours and I found that I liked the Native American exhibit, and the bird exhibit the most. I haven't been there in six years and I thought there would be new exhibits but there weren't.
ReplyDeleteI went to the Grafton Peace Pagoda for the project. There is only one other Peace Pagoda in operation in the United States, and only 80 Peace Pagodas in the world. The Grafton Peace Pagoda is a very peaceful, quiet place, and people of all faiths are welcome there.
ReplyDeleteI went to a play at Mac-Hayden Theatre called "Carousel". Mac-Hayden is located in Chatham and has many plays through out the season. The season starts in May and goes until September with a new show every two weeks.
ReplyDeleteI submitted an entry before, but it didn't show up,so...
ReplyDeleteMy mom and I went to Cape Cod over the summer. While we were there we visited the Jonathan Young Windmill, which is what I wrote my letter on. It was built in the sevevteenth century yet is still open to the public and has a very informative tour.
I went to a summer camp this summer at the College of St. Rose called St. Rose Summer Youth Music. I played in the orchestra and sang in the All Campus Choir. It was a really great experience, and very challenging! It was a day camp that lasted two weeks, with two orchestra, wind ensemble, and select choir concerts and one All Campus Choir, piano, and chamber orchestra concert.
ReplyDeleteI went on a trip to Lake Luzerne Public Campground. I went camping with my grand parents and stayed for two nights. They went because Lake Luzerne is the only State Park in the Reigon that offers equine facilities and trails for horseback riding. The campgrounds are beautiful and there is plenty to do. My sister and I did a lot of biking and went swimming at a small beach off the lake. Some of the other activities were fishing, canoueing, and horseback riding.
ReplyDeleteI went to the bennington museum. There were a lot of exhibits I liked. There was one exhibit that had wood sculptures of birds that were so good that they looked real.

ReplyDeleteMy family and I went to the New York State Museum for the project. My favorite exhibit there was the World Trade Center exhibit. I got to take lots of pictures of the pieces in the exhibit. It was really cool to see parts of the tower that were bent and badly misshapend.
